Tools & Tips

Teaching Content v. Teaching Comprehension

Are we giving our students fish or teaching them how to fish?

One of the more challenging transitions to make is moving from content-based reading instruction (discussion questions, teacher-led) to comprehension strategy instruction (strategic questions, gradual release of responsibility to students).

A good barometer is to track the types of questions you ask during reading instruction. Use the two examples below to categorize the types of questions you ask.
Content
What events led Sophie to take a bus trip in search of her mother in So B. It?
Comprehension Strategy
What clues did you find to help you make an inference about Sophie?
